Acquire: Adjust Your Profile

Whenever I talk to people about breathing, I watch them adjust their posture. Usually this involves some straightening of the torso with culminates in a hard shift of the shoulders backward. I suppose it is great that we correlate breathing to alignment, sadly many people don’t understand how the body actually aligns.

Remembering that the spine has curvatures, and that your spine might have unique characteristics, is a great place to start. Then think of improving your posture in profile. Seriously get a side view, even if you need to recruit a friend with a phone to truly capture it.

Can your head better balance on the top of your spine? Can your shoulder blades work towards eachother and downwards in order to bring the upper torso into alignment? Can your lower back and hips articulate in all their possible directions with some ease?

Trying to understand what alignment means in your body is far more important than a abstract idea of posture. Think elongation, think movement and think engagement. Then, check your profile.
