Articulate: Do You Know Who You Are?

I had an interesting chat with a stranger yesterday. We got onto the subject of work and when she found out what I do, she said an interesting thing.

“It’s so interesting how people embody themselves, vocally.”

We spoke further about people she sees in her workplace and their vocal challenges but I couldn’t get that one statement out of my mind. People are entering spaces with varying degrees of our full humanity all the time. We end up navigating so many variables in our quest to be heard that it can seem exhausting. Many of us are flinging ourselves at the world trying to be more relevant, more seen, more ourselves.

All of this seeking is incredibly human. But in all this striving how many people realize that part of the embodiment, an integral part, is the voice. It is how many of us enter the world. We can take a breath and plan that entry or we can try to marshal the air molecules as we go along.

It is really is about choice. What do you want your embodiment in the world to be? You can never fully control how you are received and therein lies the risk. But you can make a choice and take a leap of faith. Luckily for all of us the voice can definitely fly.
