Perform: What If I Build It and No One Comes

I teach a lot of workshops. Among them are self-created snapshots of my process which I run from my offices in Boston or Cambridge. These sometimes lead to future business but are mostly a way for me to share a technique or two with people who may never seek out a professional coach.

Like most people running this type of event, I am it. The teacher, admin, and marketing staff. And sometimes, I fail at the marketing piece and find myself teaching to just a couple of people. Add any foul weather (such as rain) and I can find myself alone in a room wondering about my life choices.

The fact is that sometimes you can line up all of your gifts, book the room, and appear ready to share yourself only to find that you are alone. Sometimes it could have been prevented, sometimes not, but the key isn’t this moment but the next one. What you do next is the strongest indicator of your future success. As it is, I gave my presentation to video and treated myself to a glass of wine. I’ll be ready again, next time.
