Perform: The Stories We Tell

Brené Brown (Dr of Social Work, author, speaker, and kickass human) talks about "the story we tell ourselves." In essence, how we are responding to a given situation based on our internal story.

When we get up to speak or sing for others we are always weaving an internal story. Often we are doing so as we tell an external story, which might also have its own internal story. It can get exhausting and it can separate us from the point, which is to connect to other humans.

Which is why I have a simple rule about stories -- Always from scars, never from wounds. If something is bothering me right now, that story is not ready for prime time. Sure, I could tell it but I would not be telling it from a place of resolution which doesn't work for me. Me being me, it probably is time to engage in some clear conversation about it with someone, be it a therapist, friend, or the person(s) cast in my story, but I digress.

The task for today is simple (ha!). Just try to be clear about the story you are telling yourself about the stories you are telling.

If you can't get to clear, okay -- try kind.
