Office Space: Setting the Stage

October 19, 2020
5 min read

One of my primary goals as a teacher is to help people towards clarity and confidence in speaking. This does not mean that the most direct approach is always best. Some conversations, and some people, require a little stage dressing.

The first rule of embodied communications is to prepare your instrument, the body, to do its best work. The second is to know who you are communicating with.

If you need a certain environment in order to have a specific conversation, you should at least attempt to create it. If an environment will make your intended audience more receptive, you should attempt that. This could be as simple as wearing the shoes (insert alternative here) that make you feel like a million bucks. Or, as simple as scheduling a call for 2 pm because the person you are speaking with is always more receptive after lunch.

The invitation today is to give yourself permission to create your moments, to choose when to engage. And, to make sure it is also a good time/place for your target(s) to engage.
