Acquire: Game Plan

Even if you live in the Northeast where COVID-19 infections have been low, you are probably starting to hear some rustling. The numbers increasing as tourist season is in full swing. Hospitals quietly preparing for the second surge as they start to see more cases. And, the inevitably approaching flu season which will complicate everything. It is a tense time for public health but also for your breathing.

There is something about an airborne pathogen that makes us do weird things with our breath. Some people unconsciously develop more shallow breathing, others dive into strengthening exercises for the lungs. And some people will start holding their breath more. Here's the thing, we can and should be wearing masks, washing hands, and social distancing. But we cannot force others to do so or stop a pandemic on our own.

Now is perhaps a good time to plan. What do you need to feel safer? What can you influence in your life, that will make you feel secure? And once you have begun to think about those things, consciously breathe through it. Make some noise, sing something loud, move your body, and breathe to support those things.

As a matter of fact, put a little post it on your computer right now to remind yourself to get up, vocalize, and breathe.
