Variance: On Things Left Unsaid

I’ve missed writing the blog this week. Still, I needed to take a few days to let other voices fill the Ether.

We are not okay. The world roils with the pandemic, hunger, violence, and climate change. The United States is in a struggle for its soul — and losing. And, in our personal and professional lives, we are not communicating well.

Our voices are under-supported, over-worked, and still not saying the most important things. That feeling that you can’t breathe. The sensation of something being stuck in the back of your throat. That low roll of your gut craving more food, more drink, more ‘more’. Or perhaps, just a steady sensation of shame or unease. All of these things are markers of those things unsaid.

Many of us are struggling with words right now myself included. But there are things that must be said. So you must breathe. You must fill your lungs and then let that exhaled air make noise, any noise. When that tempts you to feel things, to think things, or to say things — you must allow it. You don’t have to allow it in-person. There need be no witnesses. But you owe yourself a voice, your voice. A voice empowered by the air in your body and the complexity of your humanity.

When you allow yourself to speak your truth, to voice your fears is it incredibly clarifying. All truths are not beautiful but they are still Truth. I can not promise that you will like what you say but it will help you, in the long-term, to say it.

Keep breathing.
